Arashi Daigo was born during a fire in exchange for his mother's death. He grew up playing his mother's chess, and is undefeated at shogi. However, when Daigo enters junior high school, he suffers his first defeat at the hands of a drunk man he meets one day. Through this encounter with Kito 8-dan, a genius in the shogi world, Daigo becomes even more obsessed with shogi.
